If you’re not going away, you still have to work while your kids are out of school, so what can do you?

Well, your kids can stay home all day and play video games or they can come to a Spring Break Boot Camp at The Digital Arts Experience and create something amazing!

From LEGO animation and 3D printing, to video game programming with Scratch or Python, we’ve got programs for all ages and all skill levels. Over the past six weeks, The Digital Arts Experience (The DAE) has been teaching 3D Printing to students ages 10-12 at the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library in North Salem, NY. The class used their new knowledge of 3D printing to create miniature replications of local historical buildings.

“This class puts a unique spin on our normal 3D Printing with Minecraft class. Working with the town of North Salem, we secured blueprints and drawings of a number of historical buildings in town, and the students were challenged to use Minecraft to create 3D models based on the drawings,” says Rob Kissner, President of The DAE.

Buildings modeled thus far include Delancy Hall, Croton Fall School House and Briddleside in addition to others. After receiving the blueprints, students went to work in Minecraft’s Creative Mode to map and build out each structure. Minecraft makes for an excellent modeling tool because every block is the same size, making it simple to build to scale. It’s a natural fit with kids because they don’t need to learn an abstract CAD program, but rather can use a program they are comfortable and confident with. DAE instructors love using Minecraft in a class setting because it’s accessible; building in Creative Mode is all about exploring, planning, creating and collaborating.

“I was amazed at how intricate their projects were. They all took their time to pay attention to each detail to ensure their models were accurate,” said Lory Murariu, an instructor from The Digital Arts Experience. “This project really challenged the students to think critically about the blueprints they were given and how to convert them into 3D models for print.”

Last week, The DAE took models that the students designed in Minecraft and 3D Printed them at the Makerspace inside their White Plains facility. With five 3D Printers, The DAE has created thousands of hours of student work.

The DAE hosts after school, weekend and summer STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts & math) programs for kids and teens ages six and up. They hold classes at their White Plains location and also send instructors throughout Westchester to teach programs at various locations. Computer Programming, Coding, 3D Printing, Animation, Video Game Design, Building in Minecraft, Scratch, Python, Java and Graphic Design Classes Begin in Westchester County on January 21, 2017

Let’s face it — kids can take a Scratch Programming class in many different places throughout Westchester County, or do the Hour of Code from home. There are a million and one ways to learn about 3D printing, computer programming or animation. You get the picture… And so do we.

But there’s the thing: experience. Meaningful learning is all about the experience. Knowledge retention happens when a person can put emotion behind the skills they learn.

Think about driving. Someone can show you or tell you how to drive all day long while you’re in the passenger’s seat, but until you get in the driver’s seat, get your hands on the wheel, put on your blinker, run over a few curbs and get pulled over for speeding, you really don’t learn very much. (We don’t encourage speeding, by the way! It was a metaphor…)

At the DAE, students drive. They get their hands on the tech. They try to go too fast and run into problems. We teach our kids about failure and how not to panic when something goes wrong — about how glitches are good because they teach us what we need to fix. We encourage thoughtfulness and problem solving, discussion and thinking outside the box.

Our world is so fast. It’s easy to throw information at people (especially kids) and expect them to get it. (Those kids with their iPads just know how to do all the things!) Are High School Students Smarter than a Railroad Engineer?

(White Plains, October 24th, 2016) The Digital Arts Experience in White Plains, Westchester, NY announces the first teen challenge that tests the creativity of High school students using ultra-low cost technology to bring significant tech solutions to infrastructure problems.

This one day “hackathon” in December, at their center in downtown White Plains will host teams from area high schools that will compete to build a better railroad safety systems using extremely low-cost sensors and controllers.

The contest will be mentored by science teachers who will shepherd the students through the usage of Arduino controllers, inexpensive sensors and a simple programming language.

“The accessibility of powerful, low cost technology coupled with the uninhibited, innovative minds of the youth of today should make this an exciting event,” says DAE Director, Rob Kissner. “High Schools students are extraordinarily creative and technically inclined and may provide us with new ideas and insights that completely change the way we look at public safety in all industries.”

“The great thing about youth is that they are not beholden to the past and bring really fresh thinking,” says co-organizer Alan Brody, a tech entrepreneur, startup coach and author.

The Future – Collisions Anywhere
The kinds of ultra-cheap technology the teens will develop in this one day contest could be used anywhere that a collision is possible, such as with pillars in parking lots, shopping carts and parked cars and even with aiding the elderly or the blind.

The grand prize of $500 is being donated by the Brody family of Edgemont in honor of Ellen Schaeffer Brody and the victims who were lost or injured at the tragic incident in Valhalla in 2015.

ABOUT THE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12th PROGRAM

The Challenge
Each team will have the same set of tools: an Arduino Uno microprocessor, various basic sensors (light, pressure, temperature sensors, etc.), and various simple output devices (LEDs, buzzers, motors, etc.). Teams will design, build and test their systems in real world scenarios with aid of mentors throughout the process.

The Cost of the Tech
The total cost of each construct is expected to be under $50 – in some cases as low as $20.

Free to Participate
This challenge is open to all high school students and is free to participate. DAE will provide all controller and sensor equipment although students are free to supplement if they wish.

Looking for something for your kids that is both fun and educational? The Digital Arts Experience is now enrolling for STEM programs for your kids for Fall 2016.

After school classes run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as well as both Saturday and Sunday. Classes meet once a week, for 6 weeks. Topics include, but are not limited to: 3D Printing, Coding, Design, LEGO Stop Motion, Minecraft Animation, Video and more.

The DAE’s classes are small, hands-on and project based. That means the instructor to student ratio is small while each student gets their own computer to work on for the duration of the program.

3D Printing Programs for Kids at The DAE

With our 3D printing class gaining in popularity, and our addition of 2 more 3D printers, students are coming up with new and creative designs to bring into the physical world here at The Digital Arts Experience.

In our general 3D Printing & Modeling class for ages 12 and up, students are taught how to used 3D CAD software, like TinkerCAD and 123Design. TinkerCAD is a simple web based platform for 3D modeling right in the browser window. With kids being the main target audience, simple 3D shapes and letters can be placed on the grid plane, easily grouped together to make more complex objects, and also manipulated to make custom shapes. After students get the hang of TinkerCAD, students are introduced to 123Design, an Autodesk application free for download. Like TinkerCAD, pre-made shapes are provided but 123Design offers more advanced tools, giving students more flexibility and versatility to form their ideas.

The most exciting part about this class, is observing a desktop 3D printer in action, bringing a 3D model to life layer by layer. The students learn how to export their models to a file type that the 3D printers can read, which is a stereolithography file (STL). Once they prep the printers by leveling the build plate and selecting the correct file, it’s time to print!

The goal of the class is to turn your digital CAD designs into physical objects. Using CAD software, students blueprint designs and must carefully and accurately measure to scale in order to produce a functional 3D model. This course explores the design and building aspect of engineering for creating physical structures.

This multidisciplinary program not only covers electrical engineering with an introduction to electronics, but also covers the computer programming language ‘Processing’. Students bridge digital and physical engineering by coding original video games and wiring their own controllers to be used in conjunction with the game. Finally, students tap into CAD design as well where they sketch out and design their own 3D cases for their controllers and 3D Print them.

2) Computer Programming

A computer programmer is, in essence, a programmer, computer programmer, developer, dev, coder, or software engineer who writes computer software. At The Digital Arts Experience, we recognize the importance of learning a computer programming language at a young age. In this rapidly advancing technological world that we live in, having the ability to program a computer is going to be a basic essential literacy.

The computer programming languages that we teach are HTML/CSS, Java, Javascript, Processing, Python, Ruby & Scratch. Here’s a closer look at our 4 hottest computer programming classes:

An intro course that is a great start for older students to begin programming using Java. Students will begin to look at Java programming and create their own games using the program, Greenfoot. These games can be either an original idea or a re-imagining of a classic. Components of Algebra, intergers, whole numbers and PEMDAS are applied.

Python is the perfect language to begin programming with actual code. It is written entirely in English and does not require abstract language or terminology, so it is easy to learn & understand. Students will start with writing simple programs and work towards programming text based games that will exercise their programming skills and develop fluency with Python. Math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as using whole numbers and negative exponents

Scratch is a tile-based visual platform that helps teach basic syntax and logic concepts that drive computer programming by users stacking command blocks together. It can be used to create virtually anything: from interactive stories and animations to video games. Students create their very own games, animations, cards and stories. Basic programming and math concepts such as event handlers, loops, conditions, operators and variables are taught.

An intro course designed to teach students the basics of iOS app development. Students in this course will learn both the basic language structure of Objective-C and the ins and outs of Apple’s free development tool Xcode, which is designed specifically to make programming iOS apps as simple as possible. By the end of the course, students will have completed several basic apps and will have the tools to continue designing apps in the future if they should desire.

3) Web Developer

Entry Level Salary: $51,000+

Average Salary: $66,000+

With a projected 20% increase over the next 10 years, web development jobs are quickly increasing by the thousands. From back end development to front facing web design, user experience, and more. Web Developer tasks include:

  • Write code to generate web pages, access databases and business logic servers.
  • Work with with designers and content producers.
  • Test and document software for web sites.
  • Write, modify, and debug software for web sites.

Web Development combines elements from both the creative and technical world. In this class, students will learn how to build a website from the ground up using HTML & CSS, and explore the design aspects of putting together a stunning and modern looking site. Students will complete the class with their very own, customized sites.

Javascript is the life-blood of Web Development. It’s how we bring life to ordinary websites by making them interactive and engaging. In this course, you will learn how to write Javascript code, manipulate web pages, and build complex web applications. Along the way, students will be introduced to jQuery, a powerful JS library, and build at least 2 working web applications. By the end of the course, students will have gained the skills necessary to create their own web applications, as well as, implement their own custom Javascript into existing projects.
