2015 Midsummer Highlights at The DAE

Midsummer Recap

Before we relive the highlights of the first part of the summer, there’s still plenty of time to end your summer at the Digital Arts Experience. Summer Session 4 runs from August 17th to the 28th, and we end our summer camps with Summer Session 5 from August 31st to September 4th. If you can’t make it for the summer, don’t worry because Fall Registration is currently live and the The DAExpress is taking bookings for Minecraft birthday parties.

Class in MakerspaceOur summer kicked off with a record high number of registrations for Summer Session 1 compared to previous years. We greatly enjoyed the packed facility and buzzing energy that brought along. On the last day of the first session, the DAE hosted a celebration for our 3 year anniversary!

DAE 3 Year PartyIn addition to enjoying good food and company, attendants heard the DAE announce two new ventures: DAELearning and DAE Makerclub. DAElearning will be an online subscription based site that provides members with interesting, educational videos on Programming Languages, 3D Printing, Mac Basics, and much more.Members of DAE Makerclub will have complete and unlimited access to our facility including labs, 3D printers, and more.

DAE Makerclub

Then Summer Session 2 came along and broke the record the previous session had just set. This high number was partially due the numerous kids who reenrolled in our classes. Our site was at max capacity with every single computer being used! Summer Session 3 started smoothly and is currently going on. Check out a student made short film below.

A Quick and Dirty Guide to EQ’ing

Treble, mid, bass. High frequency, low frequency. These terms all relate to the EQ (or equalizer) for any sort of aural vibration and its accompanying adjustment. Without going into a large amount of detail on the inner workings of the ear and how it picks up sound, there are good and bad frequencies and the goal of a mix engineer is to make the best parts of his mix stand out to the listener without killing them. Getting a mix to that point though is much easier said than done. First off, you want to have a good, clean recording of all the instruments involved. And secondly, you have to get them to sound nice together through a pair of speakers. One of the first things to do is to utilize an EQ. But before we can start EQing, we need to go over a few pre-EQ concepts.

After School Program for Kids & Teens in Westchester County

The Digital Arts Experience (The DAE) of White Plains is now offering custom designed After School programs in Westchester County. In addition to their regularly scheduled classes that include 2D/3D Animation, Graphic Design, Java Coding, Moviemaking, Web Design with HTML/CSS and more, The DAE is pleased to now be able to personalize your child’s experience even further. The DAE’s classes are 100% hands on and focus on collaboration so your teen will develop social, technical and creative skills. The programs enable kids to work with the most up to date digital arts tools and technologies.

With the ability to customize programs, your child and their friends can get the private and personalized attention that they deserve at their desired time; after school or on weekends.

Ed Vaizey, UK Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries once said, “Computer skills are the grammar of the 21st Century.” But not enough schools have the budget or funding for these types of programs. According to http://www.code.org/stats:

  • Computer science is the highest paid college degree

  • Computer programming jobs are growing at 2X the national average

BUT…

  • Less than 2.4% of college students graduate with a degree in computer science

  • 9 out of 10 schools don’t even offer computer programming classes

  • In 36 of 50 states, coding classes don’t count towards high school graduation math or science requirements

Code.org preaches an important message: “What most schools don’t teach” with BIG names to back it up: Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, will.i.am, Chris Bosh, Jack Dorsey, Tony Hsieh, Drew Houston, Gabe Newell, Ruchi Sanghvi, Elena Silenok, Vanessa Hurst, and Hadi Partovi. Directed by Lesley Chilcott, executive producers Hadi and Ali Partovi.

These guys MUST think it’s pretty important! So why aren’t you doing something about it? Talk to you child about the importance of learning a new language – code, design, technical computer skills! And bring their friends along!

Intro to 3D Animation with Blender: Classes at The Digital Arts Experience in Westchester

Hey Westchester! Summer is fast approaching. It officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere on June 21, 2013, at 1:04 A.M EDT, to be exact. At around the same time, The Digital Arts Experience (The DAE) in White Plains, NY will be busily preparing to begin its summer camps for kids and teens that start the second week of July.

Although their camps will run Monday through Friday from 9:00AM – 4:00PM, The DAE wanted to provide alternate options for weekend classes. Starting the day after the summer solstice, The DAE will begin an 8-week Saturday 3D Animation class for teens ages 16-20.

The class, entitled “Intro to 3D Animation using Blender” will give teens the opportunity to explore the open source program Blender, and learn how to create their own stunning 3D characters and animations.

The DAE’s very own Animation instructor, Nicholas Sceusa, was recently interviewed by Phil Shapiro, educator and open source software enthusiast via opensouce.com. In the interview, Nick discusses his use of Blender at The Digital Arts Experience in Westchester, and how he teaches it to high school students. To view the blog entry, please follow the link: Teaching the open source creative tool, Blender, to high school students.

The Digital Arts Experience’s classes are small, 100% hands on and focus on collaboration so your teen will develop social, technical and creative skills for the present and for the future. The classes are held at a max of 6 students so that everyone gets the personal, individualized attention they deserve. Everyone also gets their own 21.5” iMac computer to work on throughout the class, to enable them to work with the most up to date digital arts tools and technologies. To sign up today, please refer to the teen program application form.

As for the Summer Camps at The DAE, kids & teens can choose their area of interest in either: Animation, Graphic Design, Moviemaking, Photography and Web Design. These 2-week programs are all project based, so everyone will leave with completed projects and work to show for a portfolio. To view the summer camp application, please refer to this link.
